What is subtitling and voice-overs?

Subtitling is performed by translators and voice-over is normally done by interpreters. Subtitles are written translations of spoken dialogue on audio-visual media. They do not necessarily follow the speaker word-for-word. Voice-overs are verbal translations of spoken dialogue on audio-visual media. They allow spectators to listen in their own language. In both cases, the translator or interpreter will consider the socio-cultural context and the speaker’s tone of voice, humour and expressions.
